Botox on the High Street
We were asked to quote on the news regarding Superdrug’s plans to offer Botox and Filler Treatments by registered Nurses for patients over the age of 25 at their flagship store in London. The news quickly spread across the broadsheets and we were asked to provide a quote for The Telegraph initially, which later spread to the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, The Star and Express newspapers and the glossies including Harpers Bazaar and Vogue amongst others.

The changes mean that beauty therapists will not be allowed to register to car out injectable procedures such as BotoxTM and dermal fillers. Leading UK Consultant Plastic Surgeon Gerard Lambe, who runs The Reflect Clinic in Manchester and speaks for The British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons said “While Superdrug may be hiring medically trained nurses, it is crucial members of the public do not treat having Botox and dermal fillers as casual beauty treatments, like brow threading or waxing” Superdrug claims their reasons for doing so (sic) are that in their research of 10,000 people, 37% claim they choose to take up aesthetic services to appear youthful and 25% claim it boosts their confidence.

But The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons warned that Botox and dermal fillers should not be seen as “casual beauty treatments” like eyebrow threading or waxing. Spokesman Gerard Lambe said “Administering an injection of any kind is a very serious procedure and requires an experienced and qualified health professional. All kinds of risk can arise, from infection to incorrectly applied needle placement over delicate facial muscles – which can lead to paralysis”

Mr Lambe who runs the Reflect Clinic in Manchester said “Lip fillers are a real issue too and I often get women at my clinic needing corrective treatment following dangerously injected fillers. My advice is to always check your provider’s medical qualifications, inspect the clinic for hygiene as well as health and safety, and always get proof that they are on the official Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners register which notably recently blocked beauty therapists from registering to do injectables, such is the seriousness of these procedures.

Over at The Daily Mirror, (page 6), the story was
A High street chemist is offering Botox and dermal fillers to it’s Customers. Superdrug has launched the service for Over 25s at it’s flagship London Strand store before rolling it out nationwide. The treatments start at £99 and are carried out by a Qualified Nurse in a consultation room. The chain said it was reacting to Customer demand. Gerard Lambe of the British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons warned Botox is not a “casual treatment”.
