BBC Radio Scotland rang Mr Lambe this week to ask him if he would do a live interview on Brazilian Bum Lifts.
It has been reported that there has been a 41% rise in patients asking for BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift or Brazilian Bum Lift) surgery.
BBL is surgery to the buttock, which increases the surface area of the buttocks and typically adds fat to the top part of the bottom to give it a more rounded appearance from the back view and also to look higher from the side view as some women do report a flatter looking bottom after having children despite rigorous exercise to the area which doesn’t make enough difference to their shape so they enquire about cosmetic surgery to enhance this area.
The procedure name was first coined in Brazil in South America, where the fashion started for enhancements of the buttocks and was leveraged into mainstream culture by reality TV star and influencer Kim Kardashian of Keeping up with the Kardashians TV.

As with most trends these days, the trend has spread worldwide and to the UK, leading to a large increase in enquiries despite COVID-19, lockdowns, Brexit, economic instability and governmental changes!
Kaye Adams
You will remember Kaye Adams as she is best known for being a presenter and host of ITV’s daytime discussion show Loose Women. She has been presenting the programme since 1999, stopping in 2006, moving to the panel of Channel 5’s morning show The Wright Stuff for five years and then she returned to Loose Women in 2013; Kaye has remained there ever since.
Previous to Loose Women, Kaye Adams’ career took off in 1988 when she became a regular presenter on Scottish TV’s legendary news programme Scotland Today. She was also the host of STV’s Scottish Women which ran for six years and won a number of Television Awards. Scottish Women still ranks as one of the most successful STV has ever produced. It began the start of Adam’s career as a talk show host.
So is it against this backdrop of sterling journalism that Gerard prepared to be interviewed on Tuesday, 26th January 2023.
Luckily for us, she was gentle with him!
Kaye asked him
Kaye: Apparently, it is one of the most potentially dangerous plastic surgery procedures, is that right?
Gerard: The problem with it is if you are injecting large amounts of fat, deep into the veins, this fat can then travel round the body and cause blood clots in the brain or in the heart and cause severe complications such as a stroke and even death.

BAAPS
In 2015, there were reports of intraoperative mortality related to pulmonary fat emboli associated with Brazilian Bum Lift surgery and in 2018 with growing concerns about the high mortality rate associated with this cosmetic surgery procedure, BAAPS then recommended it was not to be performed by its plastic surgeon members, who are the most highly skilled and trained plastic surgeons in the UK.
After thorough research and analysis, The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (@thebaaps) has since made the following recommendations:-
The development of the present guidelines and recommendations has been stimulated by the evidence that has emerged since 2018, based on scientific review and analysis. BAAPS guidelines now recommend that Gluteal Fat Grafting is safe to perform under two key conditions:

Injection into the subcutaneous plane only – there is a plethora of evidence to suggest this significantly reduces mortality related to the procedure perhaps this needs to be changed to – the evidence shows that the only deaths from the procedure have been when fat has been injected into the deeper muscle layer.
Intraoperative ultrasound must be used during the placement of fat in the gluteal area to ensure that the cannula remains in the subcutaneous plane – this is the only way that surgeons can be confident they are not in the muscle layer.
